TMJ Syndrome - a pain in the jaw
If you are suffering with TMJ pain or discomfort, acupuncture can help relieve the inflammation, pain and tension commonly associated with conditions of the TMJ. Patients with acute pain can often experience swift relief in a few treatments, with more chronic conditions taking a series of treatments over several weeks. Chinese Medicine seeks to resolve closer to the root causes of the condition – stress, muscle tension, system imbalances, as well as the pain in the jaw area, all in one treatment. In addition points are chosen away from the site of the pain, in the legs and arms, so no points are needed on face or jaw.
Osteopaths treat TMJ (temporomadibular joint) dysfunction by assessing the mechanics on the area. Muscle and tendon balance and neck joint movement play an important role in the function and use of the jaw.
Alignment problems of the TMJ can occur due to strains of the localised muscles, tendons and ligaments or old neck injuries. These misalignments cause deviations in the way the jaw move, disrupting the natural hinge movement. If the alignment changes it can result in clicks, sometimes painful, often noisy. The click in the jaw can be on opening or closing, occasionally both or a feeling of locking.
Osteopaths are trained to diagnose and treat these factors using a variety of soft tissue and joint techniques combined with exercises. Cranio-sacral techniques may also help with relaxation.
We have three Osteopaths at The Trinity Practice, Kevin Partridge, Emma Childs and Emma (Chip) Chippendale Ceely, two Acupuncturists Jo Lenny and Sal Pande and Paul Edwards is our Soft Tissue and Remedial Massage Specialist.
